A jewel in the mountains

The outside of King Ludwig II’s House on the Schachen (Schachenhaus), built in 1870, is rather modest and maybe even underwhelming. But the inside is in stark contrast, adorned in majestic splendour. Every year, King Ludwig II would spend 10 to 12 days at this summer retreat in the company of around 20 servants.

  • Ascent from Elmau via Wettersteinalm along the Königsweg (King’s Way) – approx. 3.5 hours on foot
  • The Turkish Room with its fountain in the centre is like something from 1001 Nights
  • Colourful stained glass windows create fantastic moods of lighting
